Part 6

The Philadelphia Story (1946-1948)

Perhaps 50 million people were displaced because of WWII. A number of different refugee and relief efforts occurred before, during, and after the war. The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) was founded in 1943 and included the United States and 44 other nations. Its purpose was to “plan, coordinate, administer or arrange for the administration of measures for the relief of victims of war.” It worked with dozens of charitable organizations to distribute $4 billion of basic necessities. UNRRA also played a major role in helping displaced persons return to their home countries in 1945-46. It was later replaced by the Marshall Plan.
